Welcome to the “Is It Still Funny?” website, the online corollary to the “Is It Still Funny?” film series beginning tonight (April 12) at the Music Box Theatre.
The first film is “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” directed by John Landis from a screenplay by Douglas Kenney, Harold Ramis and Chris Miller. This was a game-changer as well as huge hit in 1978, grossing $120 million on a reported $2.8 million budget and inspiring toga parties on campuses across the continent.
For a raunchy, R-rated film, this success was unprecedented, and such filmmakers as Bob Clark (“Porky’s”) and another Lampoon writer, John Hughes, took note. Meanwhile, the movie launched the film career of John Belushi as well as Karen Allen, Kevin Bacon and Peter Riegert, among others.
When it came out, “Animal House” was hilarious. Is it still?
We’ll find out tonight.
